How to Develop a Custom Powdered Supplement
Share
A custom powdered supplement moves from a defined consumer use case to classification, ingredient selection, sensory work, testing and scale-up. Decide what one serving is intended to deliver and how it will be prepared. The formula, label claims and packaging must support the same product brief.
What should the first brief settle?
Specify the intended user, serving size, liquid and mixing instructions, ingredient priorities and claims direction. Australian classification depends on the finished product’s composition, presentation and intended use. Resolve the applicable food or therapeutic pathway before assuming which ingredients or marketing statements are acceptable.
How do you assess a powder sample?
Prepare each sample with the same liquid volume, temperature and mixing method. Record flavour, sweetness, aftertaste, appearance, sediment and texture separately. Some powders disperse rather than dissolve; instructions should match the observed experience. A pleasant flavour does not by itself demonstrate nutritional composition or stability.
What happens before commercial production?
Approve ingredient specifications, allergen controls, label information and the final pack. Establish the test plan and manufacturing acceptance criteria with the relevant specialists. A production trial may reveal differences from laboratory blending, particularly in flow and uniformity, so retain a reference sample and record any changes.
What should you include in the project brief?
- Consumer, use occasion and regulatory pathway.
- Per-serving targets and ingredient forms.
- Mixing method, liquid volume and flavour benchmarks.
- Allergens, exclusions and proposed claims.
- Packaging, first-run quantity and acceptance tests.
