Natural Skincare Formulation: Claims, Trade-Offs and Testing
Share
Natural skincare development needs clear definitions, ingredient evidence and the same attention to safety and performance as other cosmetic products. “Natural” does not automatically mean safer, unregulated or easier to preserve. Decide what the brand’s claim means and how each ingredient and finished product will support it.
How should a brand define natural?
Specify whether the claim concerns ingredient origin, processing, a percentage calculation or an independently verified standard. Keep supplier documentation for the chosen definition. Organic, vegan, cruelty-free and Australian-made describe different attributes; evidence for one does not establish the others.
What formulation trade-offs should you expect?
Botanical ingredients can introduce odour, colour and batch variation. An ingredient may also have a different solubility or preservation requirement from its alternative. Give the formulator priorities in order: performance, sensory qualities, ingredient policy, cost and packaging. Otherwise, sample revisions can become a moving target.
Does natural skincare need regulatory and stability work?
AICIS explains that natural and organic ingredients can still fall within industrial chemical requirements. The finished cosmetic also needs appropriate safety, stability and microbiological assessment. Avoid assuming that a natural preservative is suitable for every formula or that an essential oil is a replacement for a validated preservation strategy.
What should you include in the project brief?
- Written definition of each natural or organic claim.
- Ingredient origin and supplier evidence.
- Sensory and cost priorities, with acceptable compromises.
- Applicable Australian requirements and label review.
- Testing in the final packaging and documented acceptance criteria.
