How to Develop a Custom Face Serum
Share
A custom face serum starts with a defined skin-care role, a target texture and a realistic ingredient brief. The development task is to make those choices work together in a stable formula and compatible pack. A list of fashionable ingredients is not yet a manufacturable product.
What type of serum are you developing?
A water-based gel, an emulsion and an anhydrous oil serum require different formulation and testing approaches. Specify whether the product should feel light, cushiony or rich; whether it sits under sunscreen or makeup; and how much a user should apply. Give the formulator benchmark products and describe the attributes to retain or change rather than requesting a direct copy.
How do ingredients and packaging affect the formula?
Solubility, pH, colour, odour and ingredient interactions can limit combinations. Adding more ingredients can also complicate preservation and obscure the product’s purpose. A dropper, pump and airless pack deliver different doses and expose the contents to different handling conditions. Choose the pack early enough to test the actual formula in it.
What should a serum sample demonstrate?
Agree on appearance, viscosity, absorption, residue and odour before comparing samples. Record observations using the same application amount and conditions. Stability, microbiological assessment where relevant and packaging compatibility are separate from liking a sample. Ask which tests are proposed, what they measure and what a pass means.
What should you include in the project brief?
- Intended user and cosmetic positioning, without unsubstantiated treatment claims.
- Preferred serum type and two or three benchmark textures.
- Required ingredients, exclusions and the reason for each.
- Application amount, dispensing method and preferred pack.
- Target retail price, initial quantity and launch window.
