Skincare Packaging Compatibility: What Can Go Wrong?
Share
Packaging compatibility testing checks whether the actual skincare formula and its container work together over time. It should examine dispensing, leakage, appearance and material interactions. A supplier’s generic pack specification is useful, but it cannot replace evaluation of the finished formula in the proposed pack.
What failures should you look for?
Changes can include leakage, seal problems, staining, component deformation, decoration damage or unreliable dispensing. The formula may also change colour, odour or texture. A bottle that passes a simple leak check has not necessarily passed a broader compatibility programme.
Why does dispensing affect the product experience?
Pump output, dropper dose, tube opening and product viscosity need to work together. Check whether a user can access the product near the end of the pack and whether the closure stays clean. A proposed packaging change can alter application amount or air exposure even when the bulk formula is unchanged.
How should a compatibility plan be organised?
Confirm the final component specification, fill amount, storage conditions, observation intervals and acceptance criteria with the testing team. Include transport and handling questions where relevant. Record supplier and component versions so the approved pack is reproducible. Review evidence before substituting closures, liners, pumps or decorated components.
What should you include in the project brief?
- Actual formula and final packaging components.
- Fill level, orientation and expected storage conditions.
- Leakage, seal and dispensing observations.
- Formula appearance, texture and odour checks.
- Written pass criteria, change control and responsibility for corrections.
